Everyone knows that almost all the novel adaptation movies caot truly exhaust the deep essence of the original novel; however this opinion may not hold the true in some cases. 1984, a movie based on George Orwell’s dystopian novel is an example of the case, for instance. I’ve once heard from a person that even the Somalian film industry could have filmed a chef- d’œuvre out of this wonderful novel and he may be to some extent right.(please be aware that I’m not trying to be racist)
This movie is about Winston Smith’s life in Oceania governed by totalitarian system. Deep inside Winston is not in favor of the government, but he’s not allowed to express any objection, so he’s always expostulating with himself and reflecting his ideas in a diary , although it’s illegal. As a matter of fact the clashes are between Winston vs society ( false government) and vs himself ( oppressed beliefs). After meeting a young girl he’s much more rebellious ; he’s now experiencing dangerous adventures accompanying the young girl, Julia.
They are now in love , but not the kind of love we are familiar with. They love each other, because it’s a revolutionary act against the ideals of the government. They swear that they’ll never stop loving each other. After being arrested, they know that they’ll confess everything; however the couple knew that feelings caot be altered. Sooner or later they ‘re caught, tormented, and brainwashed; even they now hate each other. The two round characters are changed, in other words they’re dynamic.
The whole movie has a zero type focalization as Winston , our protagonist is the focalizer and also the voice , and from the begiing of the movie we are hearing the internal monologues of Winston; in fact we have access to his stream of consciousness.
The themes are varied, but the main theme is power. The other one which may be a little bit marginal is modernization; for example the use of telescreens for controlling everyone; therefore the clash can also be extended to man vs technology.
Apart from the scenario which is discussed in the previous paragraphs, the film setting is so naturally shown that you can have a general picture of the Oceania. One of the other features of this movie is its meaningful soundtrack recorded by the “Eurythmics “.
The content of this movie ( actually the novel) is so controversial and extensive that caot be discussed in a one page essay, so I may end this piece of writing with a phrase from 1984:”The best books are those that tell you what you know already.”
